The Onion Network (TOR) The Tor (The Onion Router) Network is a means of relaying your traffic to either an exit node (whereby your traffic then exits the network and into the open web) or to a hidden service/site maintained within the network itself. The traffic is routed through an 'untrusted' relay circuit, whereby each relay node only knows the node before it and the node after, thus no complete list of nodes used to route your traffic can be enumerated. The network exhibits end-to-end encryption but only within itself: if your traffic is not encrypted in the first place, any person data-sniffing the exit node will be able to see where you are then going and what you are doing while there.  Tor Information

Members of the Kurdish community clashed with demonstrators at an Islamic Roadshow stall in High Road, Wood Green, yesterday at around 5pm.

Police were called to the town cente as arguments broke out between the two groups when the Kurdish people walked through Wood Green to the Kurdish Community Centre as part of Newroz - the traditional Iranian new year celebration.

Muslim activist Anjem Choudary was among groups hosting the Islamic Roadshow stall, who were heard promoting Sharia Law and urging Muslims not to vote while handing out leaflets from their tent outside Boots.

Video footage, filmed by a boy who appears to have been above The Mall shopping centre at the time, shows police separating demonstrators, while racially motivated slurs can be heard coming from the crowds.

Shoppers looked on as several police cars and a riot van arrived on scene, pushing the Kurdish community back down the high street away from The Mall, while men and women fled from the roadshow stand.

Police can confirm that no arrests were made during the incident and the Kurdish prosession arrived at the community centre at 6.11pm.

Syria shoots down a US drone

Damascus (AFP) - Syria's military shot down a US drone over the coastal province of Latakia, a stronghold of President Bashar al-Assad, state media said on Tuesday.

If confirmed, it would be the first time that Syrian forces have attacked a US aircraft since the coalition fighting the Islamic State began raids against the jihadist group in Syria in September.The US military confirmed that it had lost communication with an unarmed Predator drone over northwest Syria on Tuesday and was looking into the claims it was brought down.

The claim came as activists said Syrian regime forces had carried out an attack using chlorine gas that killed six people, including three children.

Syrian state news agency SANA reported the apparent downing of a US drone in a breaking news alert.

"Syrian air defences brought down a hostile US surveillance aircraft over north Latakia," it said, without providing further details.

While Syria is not participating in the air strikes against the IS, it has so far refrained from taking action against aircraft involved in the US-led coalition's operations to take out the extremist group.

Damascus has said it was given prior warning before the coalition began the strikes, and Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said last year that Washington had pledged its raids would not hit the Syrian army.

The strikes in Syria have largely been focused on Aleppo and Raqa provinces, where the Islamic State has strongholds.

But the campaign has also targeted the group elsewhere, and hit positions believed to belong to fighters affiliated with Al-Nusra Front, the feared Syrian wing of Al-Qaeda.

IS fighters have been largely absent from the northwestern province of Latakia, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor.

But Al-Nusra fighters are active in the province, which is home to the Assad family's ancestral village and is a bastion of the Alawite sect of Shiite Islam to which the president belongs.

According to the Observatory, the strikes have killed more than 1,600 people, most of them jihadists.

- Gas attacks 'war crimes' -

Elsewhere in war-ravaged Syria, activists and the Observatory reported at least six people had been killed in an alleged regime gas attack.

The overnight incident in Idlib, in the northwest, prompted outrage from rights group Amnesty International, which said it was further evidence of government "war crimes."

"Three children, their mother and father, and their grandmother suffocated to death after regime barrel bomb attacks," the Observatory said.

The monitor said doctors in the village of Sarmin, southeast of Idlib city, concluded that the manner of death indicated a gas, possibly chlorine, had emitted from the barrel bombs.

Activists in Sarmin said chlorine gas had been used and posted videos of a chaotic field hospital where disoriented victims coughed and held gas masks over their faces as children cried in the background.

A paramedic interviewed by an AFP journalist said first responders rushed to the scene unprepared.

"This is the first time we've experienced a poison gas attack," Motea Jalal said.

"We grabbed the masks we had. They are for fires, not for gas attacks, but that's what is available."

He told AFP paramedics retrieved the wounded and tried to wash the chemicals from the bodies, adding that more than 100 people were in need of treatment.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said in January it had "confidence" that chlorine gas had been used in attacks on three villages in 2014.

It did not assign responsibility, but its report noted that witnesses heard helicopters before the attack, which only government forces possess.

I want first to thank the Centre for Independent Studies for the

opportunity to be part of this event, with its rich tradition of

provocative debate. I want to thank the team for organising

this, and for your wonderful welcome. Most importantly, I want to

thank all of you for coming out to be part of this discussion.

My topic is ‘What are we fighting for? Islamism and the threat to

liberal values’. I’m going to approach it through three questions that

are simple to ask, but extraordinarily complex to answer:

• What’s the ideology that drives groups like al Qaeda or the

Islamic State?

• Where did ISIS come from?

• What should we be doing about it?

First, though, let me define my terms. By Islamic State, I mean

the organisation whose Arabic name is ad-Dawla al-Islamiyah fi ‘

Iraq wal Sham (now becoming widely referred to in the West as

da’ish, or Daesh), led by Abubakr al Baghdadi, now calling itself

ad-Dawla al-Islamiyah or al-Khilafa, the Caliphate. I’ll use the

acronym ISIS for this group, which fields more than 30,000 fighters.

It controls a network of a dozen cities, populations and territory

across about a third each of Iraq and Syria, owns economic assets

that make it the richest terrorist group on the planet, and is

expanding into the wider region, reinvigorating Islamist terrorism

worldwide and radicalising fringe members of our own societies,

of whom thousands are fighting alongside the group.

When I use the word Islam, I mean the second largest religion

in the world, with 1.6 billion followers, founded by the prophet

Muhammad. ‘Islamic’ refers to characteristics of that religion, and a

‘Muslim’ is someone who follows it. Islamism, on the other hand,

is a political ideology that seeks to propagate a particular form of

the religion, shape society around it, and (often) use violence to force

it on others.

Two other terms I’ll use are salafi-jihadist and takfir. A salafi

is someone who emulates early Muslims, as-salaf as-salih, the

righteous ancestors, hence ‘salafi’. The salafi movement arose in the

19th century as an effort to reassert a strict interpretation of Islam

in the face of colonialism, and experienced a revival—which some

call neo-salafism—in the 1960 after the failure of Arab nationalism

and socialism in the post-colonial Middle East. There are millions

of Salafis, most of whom don’t personally use violence, but some do

use violence to spread their beliefs within the framework of a global

religious war—a jihad—and we call that subgroup salafi-jihadist.

When I talk about liberal values, I’m not speaking of what people

in the United States call ‘Progressive’ politics, but about something

older, more basic, namely the tenets of 19th and 20th century classical

liberalism that shaped the societies we live in—individual freedom

and accountability, civil liberties, limited government, the rule

of law, free-market economics tempered by regulation, equality

of opportunity, religious toleration, the removal of violence from

politics. We differ about how to apply these ideas—how limited

should government be, how much regulation is appropriate, what

safety net should the state provide, how should we balance economic

opportunity with social justice—but these surface differences obscure

a fundamental consensus in our societies around these values.

The Obama administration is preparing to equip the so-called “moderate” Syrian rebels with the ability to order U.S. air strikes despite the group’s admitted allegiance to the Islamic State.

Members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) will be provided with radios to call in strikes from American B-1B bombers as well as pickup trucks with mounted machine guns as the president puts the final touches on plans to train as many as 3,000 rebels in Jordan and Turkey by the end of 2015.

“Negotiations have been concluded and an agreement text will be signed with the US regarding the training of the Free Syrian Army in the coming period,” said Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tanju Bilgic.

The planes will reportedly use similar munitions to those seen in Afghanistan, targeting anything from small vehicles to tanks with 500 and 2,000-pound guided bombs.

Aside from the Toyota Hi-Lux trucks, multiple groups of rebels will also be given mortars and possibly antitank weapons as well. The FSA has already been given US Tow missle a very high priced and very accurate anti tank missle system. These have already fallen iiinto ISIS #Daeshbag hands before. So we can expect it to happen again. 

A senior military official speaking with the Wall Street Journal stated that the decision would likely emulate recent bombing campaigns against the Islamic State in Iraq.

“The way we envision it, it would be very similar to Kobani,” the source said.

Ludicrously refuting previous statements by claiming not to be at war with the Syrian government, U.S. officials alleged that air strikes would likely not be ordered against the Syrian army. But I think this is the foot in the door the West has been looking for to attack the Syrian government. Turkey wants that to happen now....  even before ISIS. But the US and most European countries want to get rid of ISIL before they even think about the Syrian government, at least that's what they tell us.

Despite the Obama administration’s claims, countless intelligence and military officials have stated that the “moderate” rebels are essentially non-existent, with well over 90 percent being with terrorist groups or aligned in ideology.

Just last September, a commander with the FSA admitted to fighting alongside several terrorist organizations in the region including the Islamic State.

“We are collaborating with the Islamic State and the Nusra Front by attacking the Syrian Army’s gatherings in… Qalamoun,” Bassel Idriss, commander of an FSA-run rebel brigade, said. “Let’s face it: The Nusra Front is the biggest power present right now in Qalamoun and we as FSA would collaborate on any mission they launch as long as it coincides with our values.”

Jamal Maarouf, the leader of the Syrian Revolutionary Front (SRF), also told reporters last April that his fighters regularly worked with Al Qaeda and Al-Nusra as well.

During the same time period it was reported that “several factions within the FSA, including Ahl Al Athar, Ibin al-Qa’im,” decided to hand their weapons over to the Islamic State before pledging their allegiance to the group.

An Islamic State fighter speaking with Al-Jazeera in 2013 revealed that the FSA regularly sold its weapons to them shortly after they would receive shipments from the U.S.

“We are buying weapons from the FSA,” Abu Atheer said. “We bought 200 anti-aircraft missiles and Koncourse anti tank weapons. We have good relations with our brothers in the FSA.”

Obama’s rebels and the Islamic State even went as far as to sign a non-aggression pact with one another in order to rally against the Assad government in late 2014.

In fact, with thousands of rebels openly defecting and joining ranks with the Islamic State, President Obama was forced to brazenly repeal sections of U.S. law that banned the arming of known terrorist groups in order to keep weapons flowing.

Obama’s actions spurred a major backlash within the military at the end of 2013, resulting in numerous U.S. troops taking to social media to post photos of themselves holding up signs stating that they would not fight on the same side as terrorists in Syria.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz presciently warned in 2013 that President Obama was quickly turning the United States into Al Qaeda’s air force as the situation in Syria continued to intensify.

“We should be focused on defending the United States of America,” Cruz said. “That’s why young men and women sign up to join the military, not to, as you know, serve as Al Qaeda’s air force.”

Kurdish YPG forces invade Islamic State's Raqqa stronghold

Kurdish YPG forces have seized a hill inside the Syrian province of Raqqa, the Islamic State (Isis) Syrian stronghold, after deadly clashes.

Kurdish troops have taken Baghdak Hill south of the border town Kobani which is situated within Raqqa province. IS has been driven from Kobani by the YPG and the all-female YPJ Kurdish forces, and assisted by US-led air strikes.

The jihadist group established its de facto capital in the city of Raqqa last year after seizing vast swaths of land straddling between Iraq and Syria. In recent months the city has been pounded by warplanes from the US-led coalition.

At least 35 IS fighters and four YPG members had been killed on Sunday (15 February) in fighting near Kobani.

The Kurds have taken over at least 163 villages around the border of Kobane, which became key in the international efforts to defeat IS. Several hundred rebel fighters joined the Kurds in their effort against the Sunni militants.

The #YPG press centre claimed that 18 Daesh / ISIS / ISIL militants were captured alive.
